During the the March 28 presidential election, the card readers used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejected the thumbprint of the president Goodluck Jonathan, and did the same again, during the Bayelsa state governorship election, which held last Saturday. The former President , while addressing Journalists in Otuoke after being accredited for the Bayelsa state governorship election, advised INEC to review the concepts of card readers and permanent voter cards (PVCs) before the 2019 general election. Based on the advice, INFORMATION NIGERIA, have sort out five reasons why INEC should review card readers…
1. Card readers at some Polling units, take about two to 10 minutes to successfully test the machines, while in other areas, the machine did not work at all until major adjustments were carried out
2. Permanent voter’s card (PVC) were rejected by the card readers
3. Inability to capture the biometrics from finger tips,
4. Irregular capturing and fast battery drainage
5. Cases of INEC officials abandoning their polling units and taking card readers back to their office for proper configuration.
These kind of situations, always have a very negative impact on accreditation and actual voting, therefore INEC should reposition itself and come out with better ways of handling card readers in subsequent elections.
