APC Accuses Fayose Of Punishing Pensioners

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of deliberately failing to pay pensioners in the state their retirement benefits...

This is just as the state government announced its intention to commence the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) with the aim of surmounting the challenges of the traditional Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

The party in a statement by its publicity secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun described the action as sheer wickedness to the pensioners who had served the state meritoriously.

It claimed that the development had resulted to the deaths of some pensioners, including the recent passage of the state secretary of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Pa Rufus Kayode Ogedengbe, who died of minor ailment because he could not afford simple medicare.

He said, “Many of the pensioners are sick and some have died of minor ailments for lack of care, but the governor doesn’t care as long as he amasses wealth and appropriate Ekiti money.

“We call on all men and women of goodwill to prevail on Governor Fayose to consider the plights of Ekiti State pensioners and pay them their entitlements. These old men and women have served the state well and they don’t deserve to suffer in this manner,” Olatunbosun added.

Speaking in Ikogosi Ekiti at an enlightenment workshop on the implementation of the scheme, the State Head of Service, Dr. Olugbenga Faseluka noted that the inability of government to effectively cope with the huge funding requirement leading to subsequent accumulation of debts on pension and gratuities has made CPS as a preferred option for the payment of exit benefit in the public service.

Disability: Fayose’s Wife Counsels Parents

Meanwhile, the wife of Ekiti State governor, Mrs Feyisetan Fayose, has advised parents and guardians of people living with disabilities against barring their wards from accessing education.

Mrs Fayose who restated the commitment of Governor Ayodele Fayose-led administration to special education in the state said that has propelled her to build a special school within the premises of the Erelu Adebayo Children’s Home in Iyin Ekiti.

She gave the advice in Ado Ekiti yesterday while donating food items and other materials to the five orphanages and rehabilitation homes across the state to mark her 52nd birthday anniversary.

The first lady who charged parents not to be ashamed of sending their physically challenged children to schools, warned that doing so may scuttle the dream of making them relevant in the society.

She assured that the state government will fulfil its promise to rehabilitate all the seven rehabilitation and orphanage centres, with vehicles to enhance effective functioning of their staff.

According to her, “I want to appeal to parents with physically challenged children to contact the Ministry of Women Affairs to register them, this will be helpful. They should think less about the social stigma attached to their status .

“This advice is very important because some parents might be feeling ashamed to allow them access to education”.

On the need for parents to reduce child bearing, Mrs Fayose said: “With what is happening to our economy now and financial implications of having too many children, I don’t think anybody should be advised to embrace family planning.

“If you are really blessed, I don’t think you should have more than three children , so that you will be able to take care of them. If they are many, they can become nuisance to the society”.

Mrs Fayose urged individuals and corporate organizations to partner with government to make lives bearable for the inmates in the rehabilitation and orphanage centres, rather than relying solely on international organization, whom she said are expected to play complementary roles.
