The technocrat assured people in the State that Government was in control of the health situation and would leave no stone unturned at ensuring that the current outbreak of Lassa fever in some states in the country did not spread to Ekiti....
Dr. Ojo who gave the assurance in Ado Ekiti, explained that government has commenced massive sensitization of the people in the State on personal hygiene and the need to report suspected cases to appropriate authorities for proper management.
The Commissioner added that Health workers in Primary Health Care Facilities in the State have been trained to handle suspected cases.
He appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders to assist in sensitizing the people in their areas, emphasizing the need for early detection and management of the virus in order to curb its spread.
Meanwhile, a Health expert and Scientific Officer in the State
Ministry of Health, Mr. Tosin Oso has advised people in the State to maintain a clean environment and ensure proper disposal of waste that may constitute a breeding ground for rats that have been identified as the primary reservoir and the major vector for the spread of deadly Virus.
Mr. Oso who noted that rats thrive and breed in dirty environments and open refuse dumps, stressed the need to prevent contact with blood, urine and faeces of rats, adding that eating food contaminated with urine and droppings from an infected rat could spread the infection.
According to him, the virus is also air-borne and could be transmitted when one inhales tiny particles in a contaminated atmosphere, noting however that the disease was not only manageable but curable when detected early.
He advised health workers to treat patients with symptoms of high fever with suspicion stressing that blood specimen should be collected to confirm each case which should be subsequently properly managed.
He also stressed the need for Risk Communication and community education as well as high level Sensitization of health workers.
